Even though we knew the inevitable was going to happen, pink slips are being handed ahead of schedule. Before its planned closure, Microsoft has already started cutting staff at Xbox Entertainment Studios, leaving many projects, including the Halo TV series from Steven Spielberg in limbo.

As we mentioned here, the studio was expecting an estimated 18,000 layoffs in July. CEO Satya Nadella previously explained that this shutdown was all an effort to refocus Microsoft's core business plan. More layoffs are expected before the studio is officially closed down for good.

The Hollywood Reporter mentions that studio chief Nancy Tellem and executive VP Jordan Levin have remained on board, but have also been shopping existing projects to potential buyers. Whether these projects will see in the light of day is a whole different matter.

In a statement released by Microsoft, "The reductions happening today are spread across many different business units, and many different countries. We will continue to go through this process in the most thoughtful manner possible, with the deepest respect for affected individuals and recognition of their service to the company."

AMC stepped in and bought the rights from Xbox for the U.K. drama series, Humans. Spielberg's Halo appears to be in limbo, seven while a deal is being negotiated with Showtime. Microsoft's TV production arm is currently seeking a home with Warner Bros., but they're having problems of their own right now.

We wish the discharged employees well and hope they find steady employment soon.

Xbox Entertainment Studios have been laying off employees ahead of schedule, leaving many existing projects in limbo. Readers, what do you think of this economical situation?
