Carlos Beltran and his wife Jessica lost their unborn son to a miscarriage on Wednesday.
The New York Yankees outfielder announced the news on his official Facebook page in his native Spanish along with a sketch of a tiny baby cradled by a pair of hands.
Beltran's sad and heartfelt message translates to, "Life took away the blessing of having my first boy. I believe in God and I am thankful for all His many blessings, like my beautiful family, friends, fans, and career. Everything happens and will happen according to God's perfect timing and my wife and I accept it that way. Thank you for all the love and messages."
CBSSports.com later confirmed that Beltran had left the team to grieve with his wife. He was not in the lineup for the Yankees' game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, and it is unclear whether he will rejoin the team against the Toronto Blue Jays in New York this evening.
Yanks manager Joe Girardi has indicated that Beltran should take as much time as he needs before coming back to the clubhouse.
Beltran's teammates reacted to the news following the game last night, and everyone seems to share the same sentiments.
"It puts things in perspective," veteran shortstop Derek Jeter said. "The bottom-line, family is most important."
CBSSports.com also revealed that this is not the first miscarriage for Carlos and Jessica, who have been married since 1999 and are parents to two young daughters.
