The documentary of reggae singer/songwriter Bob Marley makes its highly anticipated on-air television debut Saturday night (August 4) on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Marley, who was ranked no. 11 on Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Artists of all Time," helped to evolve and revolutionize the ska and reggae scene in Jamaica during the 1960s and 1970s with his band Bob Marley & The Wailers. This documentary is the first to deeply delve into Marley's work and personal life and includes an array of archival photos along with rare and unseen interviews and footage. Director Kevin Macdonald begins with an image of Marley's youth, and slowly probes into his creative process and personal views and inspiration. Former record producers, engineers, band mates, and executives reminisce about how it was to work with the "One Love" star, providing insight into Marley's work world. Interviews with Marley's family members, including with his mother, cousins, children, and former girlfriends, provides a clearer understanding of his personal and private life.
The documentary does a great job of not only highlighting Marley's career aspirations and success, but also emphasizes the influence and impact he held outside of the recording studio. The film leads right up to Marley's tragic battle with cancer, which took his life on May 11, 1981 at the age of 36, ridding the world of a great leader of peace and musical ambition.
The film was first screened at an intimate viewing at the music and film festival SXSW back in March and opened in select theaters on April 20, 2012.
"Marley" is the most recent installment of the Emmy award-winning VH1 Rock Docs, a program which documents and studies different cultural scenes and artists throughout the times.
Check out a VH1 sneak peak video below entitled "What is Reggae Music?" where Marley's "friends, former colleagues, and fellow musicians talk about the meaning, origin and sound of the music genre that Bob Marley made famous."
