Ozzy Osbourne still knows how to fire up a crowd with his Satan-loving tunes. Black Sabbath played a remarkable two-hour opening set at this year's Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago on Friday, making it their only reunion show to hit the states.
"F##kin' A, man! Let me hear you!" shouted the bat-chomping singer, 63, to the crowd spread out over the North Lawn in Chicago's Grant Park. Replacement drummer Tommy Clufetos, who joined the tour after original drummer Bill Ward left following a contractual dispute, kept the crowd alive as the band tore into some heavy metal classics including "The Wizard," "Black Sabbath," and "Behind the Wall of Sleep." Even with the Ozz-man somewhat lacking in the vocal department, guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler kept things strong and consistent throughout. But Ozzy, the ultimate stage man decked out in all-black with a glittering cross stitched across his chest, kept the crowd alive and on their feet with his witty and rather crude remarks, most embellished with the F-word and middle finger.
Osbourne declared Iommi, 64, the "true Iron Man" as the opening riffs to the 1970 "Paranoid" classic began to permeate the air, given Iommi's announcement back in January that he had been diagnosed with early stage lymphoma.
This is Black Sabbath's first tour together since 2005, after playing a show in their hometown of Birmingham back in May and one at a music festival in Leicestershire in June.
Ozzy told NME back in June that Black Sabbath had written about 15 new songs so far, and that more info on a new album should come in 2013.
The Black Keys, Bassnectar, M83, and Sharon Van Etten were the other performers to open the 3-day festival on Friday night. For more info on Lollapalooza and all the performing artists, check out the website here.
