Looks like Hulu just got another potential win under its belt. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the streaming service just ordered a straight-to-series deal for 11/22/63, a 9-episode series from Bad Robot Productions, which is owned by LOST, Alias and Fringe creator J.J. Abrams. The show is based on Stephen King's 2011 novel of the same name based the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
In the series, high school teacher Jake Epping jumps back through time in order to prevent the famed assassination from taking place. Of course, his mission is posed vulnerable by Lee Harvey Oswald. During the story, Epping finds himself falling in love with both a woman and the past –– both of which cause potential snags in his duty.
THR notes that Friday Night Lights and Parenthood scribe Bridget Carpenter will write the pilot and co-executive produce the series alongside Bryan Burke, Kathy Lingg and Athena Wickham –– all hailing from Abrams' Bad Robot Productions.
11/22/63 will be the first ever collaboration between Abrams and Hulu. According to the head of content and senior VP Craig Erwich, "J.J. Abrams and Stephen King are two of the most celebrated storytellers of our time, and we are excited to be working with them and Warner Bros. Television to bring this unique take on one of the most seminal historic events of the 20th century to Hulu."
On the project, Stephen King noted, "If I ever wrote a book that cries out for longform, event TV programming, 11/22/63 is it. I'm excited that it's going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams about the whole Bad Robot team." To which Abrams himself said, "I've been a fan of Stephen King since I was in junior high school. The chance to work with him at all, let alone on a story so compelling, emotional and imaginative, is a dream. We are thrilled to be working with Hulu on this very project."
