Derek Jeter has had a legendary career in New York City over the last 20 years, but this week it all comes to a close. (Unless, of course, the Yankees make the playoffs. But at 4 ½ games out of a wildcard spot in the American League with eight games to go, their chances are dwindling.)
MLB.com did the math, and Jeter has played in 382 games at the new Yankee Stadium and 1,429 in the Bronx overall, making it a bit hard to believe for many that his remaining tally at home is down to just four games.
"I'm well aware that it's winding down, Jeter told the New York Post. "I'm constantly reminded of it, but just like always, you want to play well."
The Yankees take on the Baltimore Orioles for a four-game series beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m. EST. Jeter's last game at Yankee Stadium will be on Thursday. Then he and his team will head to Boston over the weekend, where they will take on the Red Sox, closing out his career for good on Sunday.
And there will be no rest for the weary. With seven games in seven days, manager Joe Girardi plans to play Jeter in every single one of those contests.
"Obviously, some of those days are going to be DH days to keep him going," Girardi told MLB.com. "He had Monday off, but now he's swinging the bat and I'm going to keep him in there."
For many of his teammates, the hope is that Girardi will figure out a way to keep him in there into next year as well.
"Hopefully he keeps getting two hits and decides he wants to play again next year," Yanks outfielder Brett Gardner joked to the Post.
