Just as audiences got a short taste of Marvel's Agent Carter on ABC, a new cast member is  joining the upcoming ABC spy series starring actress Hayley Atwell. While HBO's Boardwalk Empire counts down to its final episodes, actor Shea Whigham is just getting started in a pivotal role on the show.

As we mentioned here, the first season takes place after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger. In the eight-episode story arc, Peggy Carter (Atwell) has returned to the states, finishing up her time in World War II. Just because the ex-solider isn't fighting n the battlefield anymore, that doesn't mean she's ready to give up serving her country.

According to Deadline, the True Detective actor will play the tough, yet fair-minded, SSR Chief Roger Dooley. Before S.H.I.E.L.D. showed up in the Marvel Comic Universe, there was the covert Strategic Scientific Reserve. Carter will take direct orders from Dooley (Whigham), who will be giving her the secret assignments.

Audiences may recognize the Boardwalk Empire actor as Eli Thompson, the younger brother of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). In the aftermath of season fourth, Eli is a wanted fugitive after murdering a corrupt FBI agent.

In our recent recap of the fifth season, we discover the fate of Eli, who has become a lonely booze hound. Working for mob boss Al Capone has only made him more violent.

Marvel's Agent Carter is expected to premiere when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on its mid-season break. Readers, are you excited to see Shea Whigham as Peggy Carter's boss?
