'Dungeons & Dragons' Sequel: Will Warner Bros. Or Universal Take Movie Rights From Hasbro?

The courts are caught in the crossfire between production company Sweetpea Entertainment and toy giant Hasbro as they argue over who actually owns sequel rights to the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

The trial has heated up, becoming a bidding war between Warner Bros. and Universal as both studios compete for the next Dungeons & Dragons movie.

D&D has been recognized as the pioneer of modern role-playing games in the gaming industry. As the referee, the Dungeon Master watches as fantastical characters embark on imaginary adventures. Your experience points grow as your characters engage in battles and collect treasure and knowledge.

According to Deadline, the seven-day trial will not end quietly. Sweatpea, which has a deal with Warner Bros., claims it should be the one to make the D&D reboot.

Attorney Patricia Glaser, who represents Sweatpea and owner Courtney Solomon, said, "Only Sweetpea, not Hasbro, has the right to make a movie with Dungeons & Dragons as its primary title."

Solomon directed the 2000 feature film adaptation, starring Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans and Thora Birch. Unfortunately, the flick received a negative reception, which resulted in low box-office numbers. If Universal gets the rights, it is taking over the franchise from the filmmaker who made it into a flop.

Lawyer Jeremy Goldman, who represents the toy giant, said, "Mr. Solomon had his shot with Dungeons & Dragons — he held on to the rights for over 20 years."

The courts have to decide who will end up with the rights to Dungeons & Dragons.
