Derek Jeter Officially Retired As New York Yankees Rout Boston Red Sox [VIDEO]

And just like that, Derek Jeter is officially retired from Major League Baseball.

With his line drive single to third base on the fourth pitch of his second at-bat, the legendary New York Yankees shortstop brought his illustrious career to a close in the third inning Sunday afternoon in Boston.

The Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 9-5, in a game that saw Jeter and Co. go up 9-0 in the top of the seventh inning before the Red Sox put some runs on the board in the bottom of the same inning.

As Jeter reached first base at Fenway Park for the final time, Joe Girardi looked to his star for a sign, and Jeter gestured back at his manager in confirmation of the plan the two had reportedly choreographed before the game, according to USA Today.

"I'm ready for it now," Jeter told ESPN after the final out. "The plan was two at-bats. I was lucky I got a hit. I guess I hit the right part of the plate."

Brian McCann made his was out of the dugout and onto the field to pinch run for Jeter, and as McCann took his base, Jeter made his rounds issuing his final goodbyes to the Red Sox and their appreciative fans.

As expected, everyone in the building gave Jeter a standing ovation as he trotted to the dugout. He tipped his cap to the fans, and then into the clubhouse he went for the last time.

"In an era where few heroes exist, over a 20-year span he represented the sport and himself in an absolutely magnificent way. It's almost hard to believe," MLB Commissioner Bud Selig told ESPN earlier this weekend. "We're blessed in baseball to have somebody who becomes the face of our sport. He is the face of our sport. And that face transcended everything."
