What a way to end the season!
Jordan Zimmermann pitched a no-hitter Sunday in the final game of the regular season for the Washington Nationals, though he needed a little help from left fielder Steven Souza, who made a leaping catch in the outfield on the last play of the game to seal the deal.
"I thought that was a double for sure, and here he comes out of nowhere and makes the play," Zimmermann told the Associated Press.
The Nationals topped the Miami Marlins, 1-0, at Nationals Park in the nation's capital.
The no-no is the first in Nationals history, though four other pitchers had accomplished the feat when the team resided in Montreal as the Expos. The last time it happened for a major league Washington team was back in 1931, when Bobby Burke threw a, 5-0, shutout for the original Washington Nationals — not affiliated with the current team — against the Boston Red Sox.
It was a dominant pitching day all around for Zimmermann, who threw 104 pitches — 79 of which were strikes — struck out 10 and walked only one, as The Washington Post reported. And prior to making Souza work for his dinner, Zimmermann had only allowed four other balls to leave the infield.
When asked in an on-field interview at the end of the game what he was going to give Souza as a reward for his miraculous catch, Zimmerman said, "Anything he wants," according to USA Today's For the Win.
As Zimmerman and the National League East champion Nats head into the NL Division Series against the winner of the wild card game, his ERA is now at 2.66, a third of an inning shy of 200 innings pitched.
