Most viewers of the TV series Dexter understand the theatrical portion of the serial killer life lead by the title character. However, this was not the case for 17-year-old Steven Miles who murdered his girlfriend in January when he told his family that an alter-ego named "Ed" had ordered him to kill her.

Miles, who was sixteen at the time of the murder, has been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in prison for the murder of Elizabeth Rose Thomas.

Miles pleaded not guilt to the crime on September 9.

The murder took place at this home in Oxted, U.K., on Amy Road at around 5:30 p.m. January 24, 2014. The cause of death was reported as a stab wound to the back according to the Surrey Police website.

During Miles' hearing it was known that he was obsessed with the show Dexter. This is when he told lawyers about how he felt he had a "lot of similarities" to the main character.

The court heard how the teen dismembered Elizabeth's body in attempt to clean up his crime scene. According to Surrey Police, Miles then wrapped her limbs in plastic wrap, similar to the character Dexter who would wrap his victims in cellophane-like material.

Elizabeth was described by family as "happy, chatty and mature beyond her years." The family explained how they are deeply saddened by their loss and no longer have any milestones to look forward to. She was also described by her friends as "really pretty, really funny and really kind' young lady."

According to Gossip Cop, lawyers were horrified by the teen's murder. "This was a truly gruesome killing ripped form the pages of a hit TV script. The evidence points to the defendant trying to emulate the actions of the character Dexter, who he idolized. The case is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched in modern TV blockbusters involving violence which shockingly led to a copycat killing in real life."
