Just this week we learned that NBC was developing a new TV series based on Cameron Crowe's iconic 1989 romantic comedy Say Anything, based on the same characters originally played by John Cusack and Ione Skye. Unfortunately, this was news to the writer/director, who was receiving plenty of questions from fans on Twitter, so he responded with a clear statement of disapproval. Though the network doesn't need his "go-ahead" for the project, it looks like NBC is stepping away from this project due to Crowe's statement.
This new series would've picked up about ten years after the movie ended, with the two lovebirds having long since broken up. Lloyd and Diane would run into each other after all of this time, thus leading to attempts at getting back together.
Hearing about this proposed TV series idea, Crowe took to Twitter with the following message:
Regarding the announcement of a "Say Anything" tv show... @JohnCusack, @IoneSkye1 and I have no involvement... except in trying to stop it.
— Cameron Crowe (@CameronCrowe) October 7, 2014
Backing up his director, Cusack also showed his own disapproval on Twitter:
Hell no !! “@readdreamwrite: .@johncusack Are you or @CameronCrowe involved with this series? https://t.co/CAIfVIR9L3” — John Cusack (@johncusack) October 7, 2014
After these Twitter developments, it looks like NBC is cancelling the project, or at least taking a huge step away from it. The network definitely didn't need Crowe's approval to make the Say Anything TV series, but it's nice to see NBC respecting the director. Perhaps the network was thinking about disappointed fans and viewers not tuning in without the consent of Crowe, though. Either way, we probably won't see this series come to fruition.
