The Knick took a hit last week with the cocaine shortage, which carried over in this week's penultimate season 1 episode, "The Golden Lotus." With Thackery slowly falling apart, what will his lover Lucy do to ease his suffering? Plus, how will the hospital manage without the painkiller? Check out our recap of the latest episode of Cinemax's hit hospital drama series. (Spoilers to follow)
Still reeling from last episode's cocaine shortage, Thackery breaks into a pharmacy to steal some. He gets caught, of course, leading to the Captain having to bribe the police to let John off. The newspapers praised him as a hero for his patients, claiming he tried stealing the cocaine for the hospital - though it doesn't name him.
Lucy, having deduced it was John, goes to check on him. He is very paranoid and even screams at her, thinking Barrow or Robertson sent her. She asks what she can do to help, to which the doctor responds, "You can find me an ocean of cocaine."
Though he tasked Lucy with this mission, it's Barrow who finds the cocaine. Shadily, of course; he asks Bunchy Collier who offers to help by adding more debt to Barrow's tab for some cocaine. Prostitution and drugs go hand-in-hand, you see. Unfortunately, it turns out to be salt water.
From there, Lucy goes to Wu's opium den, where he offers her a ton of money and opium for some foot fetish sex. She tells John she traded her bike for the opium, but we know that the Golden Lotus was how she got it.
As if you didn't see it coming, Algernon got Cornelia pregnant! It's pretty cute how Edwards reacts, but the reality is weighing hard on Cornelia, so they have to discuss aborting the child.
Lucy is simply incredible in this episode. Her German hospital sting was perfect. This of course leads to more weird liquid cocaine sex
Honestly, Everett has become one of the best characters, simply because Eleanor is bonkers. The death of adopted child Grace was inevitable, right? So why was it still so shocking? At least it leads to a great speech from Sister Harriet about dead babies going to heaven.
Gallinger has his wife institutionalized in one of the saddest scenes ever filmed. No sound, just some humming (and comedian John Hodgman)
