Tesla is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to this generation's motor vehicles. Today (October 10) CEO Elon Musk told journalists and Tesla owners about the car's new Model S and its autopilot features.
The event was packed as consumers learned about the automatic driving features.
"This car is nuts, it's like having your own personal roller coaster," Musk told the crowd.
Making matters more exciting for consumers, Musk sent out a cryptic tweet "about time to unveil the D and something else."
Musk revealed that the "D" meant the all wheel drive's dual motor configuration, which basically means an increase in power and performance.
Get this folks, the care will accelerate from zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds.
Tesla has been doing a good job of promoting the car as the go-to car in Hollywood even having the event imitate the likes of a Hollywood red carpet.
When talking about the car's settings, Musk said, "We're going to have Normal, Sport and Insane," adding that the button "will actually say 'Insane.'"
Insane indeed — the car's total power up to its sports car counterparts at 691 bhp. Its torque is just as impressive at 687 ib-ft, from 362. The additions the car's new motors and hardware adds 291 ibs of weight taking the top-of-the-line P85D's total weight to 4,936 pounds.
The real magic trick Tesla is hoping to invent is in the dynamics of the car's autopilot, and Musk says Tesla is still five to six years away from a true self-driving car. Safety is updated as well, as the Model S informs drivers of unsafe conditions with a sophisticated array of sensors.
The new vehicle lets its driviers know of what's ahead through an Image Recoginition Camera that is able to read traffic signs, land markings and if pedestrians are in view. No only can the vehicle see pedestrians it can also see through fog, rain and any other visual impariments. Backing up and have a problem? The Model S has 360 Degree Ultrasonic Radar that detects anything in your car's blind spot.
