With Halloween just around the corner all we can think about is what kind of candy to buy and indulge on. If you're looking to enjoy some tasty treats but not ruin your diet or healthy lifestyle, we've got the perfect guide for healthy Halloween candy.
When you feel yourself reaching for candy, always go for the "fun size," it has fewer calories and will be the perfect size to curb your cravings. A fun size 3 Musketeers bar is only 63 calories with only two grams of fat. This is an easy go-to over chocolate bars that are filled with caramel or peanuts, Readers Digest reported.
Another chocolate treat to stock up on this holiday are Peanut M&M's in the fun size pouches. Each pouch is 90 calories, five grams of fat and nine grams of sugar. "Peanut M&M's aren't a bad choice when you think about the fact that their peanuts contain protein, which provides a small boost of energy," the publication reported.
What about the candy classic, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup? They are a great choice especially when you want peanut butter. If given the choice Redbook magazine says Reese's are a better choice than a Butterfinger. "Since they're made with actual peanut butter, they contain 5 grams of protein, which helps to balance out their sugar content and keeps you satisfied longer," registered dietitian Amy Shapiro told Redbook.
For non-chocolate candy, you can enjoy the seasonal Peeps, in either ghost shapes or pumpkins. According to Readers Digest, one marshmallow only contains 16 calories and zero grams of fat. They do however, contain about four grams of sugar, so don't go too crazy and make sure to keep track of how many you eat in one sitting.
Both Jolly Rancher candies and Blow Pops are an awesome candy to snack on while handing out candy to children or hanging out a Halloween party this year. Both treats keep your mouth busy, which means you will be grabbing candy less often and ultimately eating less. Plus, a Blow Pop is only 60 calories and three Jolly Ranchers are only 70 calories total. The only real difference is how they affect your teeth.
"To minimize dental damage, choose a Jolly Rancher. A Blow Pop has a sweet, chewy, bubble-gum center, which glues sugar to your teeth as you chew on it," nutrition therapist and registered dietitian Limor Baum told Redbook.
