Week five of Dancing With the Stars offered a lot of change and even more surprises when it came to the judges' scores. This week's episode was the "switch up challenge" where every contestant was paired with a new partner for the week. The positive was that there were no eliminations. The negative, was if a pairing didn't work it could really hurt the dancer's chance of remaining in the competition.
In addition to different teammates this week, there were new dance styles that were introduced. Plus, British singer Jessie J was the guest judge and she didn't hold back when it came to criticism.
The first team to perform this week was Antonio Sabato Jr. with his new partner Allison Holker. The duo performed a Bollywood routine and the choreography was fabulous. Antonio was stiff at points, but overall it was a solid routine. They received 28 points.
Next up, Bethany Mota and Mark Ballas. Bethany and Mark had fun with their switch constantly taunting their real partners and making them jealous that they were missing out on all the fun. Bethany took on a hip-hop routine and attacked it. The judges loved her confidence, the fake kiss move and her "swag," giving them 32 points.
When Jonathan Bennett and Peta Murgatroyd were paired together, Peta knew she needed to get Jonathan a big score to help him escape a possible elimination next week. The two worked really hard at their jitterbug routine, but it fell short for the judges. Although the dance was really fun and upbeat, the judges said they were fearful that it could fall apart at any moment. They ended with 24 points.
As the contestant at the top of the leader board last week, Alfonso Ribeiro had a lot to live up to this week. With the help of his new partner Cheryl Burke, he was amazing. The duo did a strong and powerful flamenco routine. It was hardcore and sophisticated, which was a side that we hadn't seen from Alfonso this season. They scored 34 out of 40.
Pretty Little Liars star Janel Parrish was paired with Artem Chigvintsev this week, but she had a hard time letting go of her normal partner Val. In order to forget about him, Artem danced without his shirt on, choreographed a sexy burlesque routine and heated up the stage with Janel. They were strong, but a little too sexy according to Julianne Hough. They did however get 33 points.
The next pair was Michael Waltrip and Witney Carson. Because Michael did not receive very high scores last week, Witney tried to up his game. They performed a disco routine, but sadly it was not very good. The judges enjoyed his personality as usual, but the dancing wasn't up to week five's standards. They only got 20 points.
Tommy Chong and Emma Slater were paired together this week for a mambo and it was interesting to say the least. Although we love a Tommy dance, it was clear that he had a rough time remembering all the steps this week. The judges didn't like the Rasta music choice (but we did) and they thought the whole routine was too slow. They gave them 23 points.
Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson and Derek Hough's routine this week was awesome. Since Sadie and Bethany did a direct switch the two temporary teams worked hard to make the other team jealous. Derek visited Sadie's family and went shooting with her, while Bethany and Mark had some hula-hoop fun.
For Sadie and Derek's routine, they performed the Charleston and it was awesome. The dance was quick and upbeat, with lots of flirty moves to go with. There were a lot of cool tricks and funky footsteps, which helped them achieve 36 points.
The last routine of the night was Lea Thompson and Val Chmerkovskiy. As another direct switch, Lea and Val had fun messing with Janel and Artem and spying on them throughout their rehearsals. After seeing that Janel and Artem were going to kiss in their routine, Val added in a kiss with Lea and it was great.
Their performance was a Broadway number and it was fast and fun to watch. Lea played the character of a nurse in an old people's home where Val was a grandpa. The routine was clean and cool, plus it told a really great story. The judges were really impressed giving them 34 points.
What was your favorite routine of the night? Which switch up did you think worked best? What couple did you miss the most?
