With so many remakes in the works, it makes sense that the classic TV series Bewitched would make a comeback as well. It has been 50 years since Bewitched debuted in 1964, but now it might be returning to your TV set with a new remake thanks to Sony Pictures TV.
Deadline learned that Sony Pictures is thinking about a possible remake of the comedy, which ran from 1964-72, on ABC.
"I hear there is already interest from multiple networks in the modern-day take, which is being penned by The Vow writers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein," Deadline reported.
The original series was about a young woman named Samantha Stephens, who was also a witch and married to an ordinary man named Darrin Stephens. She cannot resist using her magic powers to fix any problem that comes her way. Despite promising Darrin that she won't use magic, she uses her powers in secret to help them in their daily lives. Plus, Samantha would wiggle her nose every time she cast a spell, making it her signature move.
In the 1964 series, Elizabeth Montgomery played Samantha and Dick York played Darrin. Dick Sargent eventually replaced York as Darrin in the series.
"Sometimes [Elizabeth] would play Samantha's cousin Serena, a character flaunting short skirts and short black hair. While it wasn't exactly a secret that Montgomery was playing Serena, the credit was given to a made-up actress named Pandora Spocks," Time magazine reported.
After the series ended, Bewitched was revived as a film in 2005 starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. The new TV revival comes from Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick's Red Wagon Entertainment. Lucy and Douglas also produced the 2005 Bewitched film and teamed up for a potential CBS remake in 2011.
"Also producing the new version is Television 360, the TV arm of Management 360, which reps Kohn and Silverstein, along with CAA. Daniel Rappaport and Marcus Blakely executive produce," Deadline reported.
