Over the past few years we've seen the iconic actor Al Pacino partake in quite a few Broadway shows. As Variety notes, he's proven to consistently draw in a crowd for each and every show he's apart of. Not only because of his name but also because of his sheer talent and ability to become a character. Well, now the publication claims that Pacino is planning to return to the stage and star in a new play by David Mamet titled China Doll.
Playing billionaire Mickey Ross, Variety reports that the playwright scribbed the role just for the Scarface actor. Of course, it isn't the first time the two have worked together. Pacino and Mamet collaborated back in 1983 for a production of American Buffalo as well as the 1992 film Glengarry Glen Ross. With that, Pacino also appeared in the 2012 Broadway version of the film, but played the role of Shelley Levene –– originally portrayed by Jack Lemmon in the film.
Tony Award-winning director Pam MacKinnon is set to direct the play, which reportedly consists of two characters. As Variety puts it, China Doll centers on Pacino's character, Ross. Ross purchases a new plane for his fiancé. Upon leaving the office, he gives his assistant (the second character) some directions and eventually takes a phone call. Yep, that's it. But hey, it's Mamet, so we know it'll be good.
The upcoming play, which will premiere in the fall of 2015, is being produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Steve Traxler –– all of whom have worked on several Mamet-productions in the past, including the aforementioned Glengarry Glen Ross, Speed-the-Plow and Race.
