Just in time for Halloween, filmmaker George A. Romero terrified audiences with his '60s zombie classic, Night of the Living Dead. Now, George Cameron Romero, a director himself, is carrying on his father's legacy as he crowdfunds the prequel, Origins.
In Night of the Living Dead, a group of strangers end up trapped together in a rural farmhouse, out in the middle of nowhere. It's not the zombies outside, they have to be afraid of. None of the racist bystanders want to follow the courageous leader because of the color of his skin.
Variety got the scoop on the 30-day IndieGoGo campaign trial. A precursor to the horror flick, Origins is set in the late 1960s and focuses on a brilliant scientist who strikes a deal with the military. With all the resources at his disposal, what the scientist learns, the rest of humanity will have to pay a price. The father will serve as producer and the son will helm the director's chair.
The younger Romero, who previously directed the indie horror/drama, Staunton Hill, explains the narrative, "I want to take back the zombie genre in the name of the legacy that my father created almost 50 years ago. I want to tell the origin story of the modern zombie, in a way that my father wasn't able to do so back in 1968."
According to the IndieGoGo page, those who contribute will receive T-shirts, props, and might be even featured on-screen as a zombie death.
