With the Batman prequel, Gotham, currently underway on Fox, The Penguin's rise to power in the DC Comics Universe is making his way onto the TV screen. As he climbs up the ladder to the top, how will Oswald Coppleput (Robin Taylor)'s relationship with his mother (played by actress Carol Kane) turn into a "creepy connection?"
In the season premiere, Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Oswald (Taylor) crossed paths unexpectedly in the fallout with Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith). Ordered by mob boss, Carmine Falcone, Jim had to pull the trigger and put a bullet in Oswald's head. Instead, Jim faked Oswald's death and told him to run away.
From our last recap, Oswald was killing his way, slitting throats, as he made his way back to Gotham. It turns out the lowly henchmen respects Jim because he is a good cop who saved his life. In the comics, both men will rise through the ranks, with Jim being named police commissioner and Oswald becoming the most feared mobster in Gotham City.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, The Walking Dead guest star reveals his character will be reunited with his mother, Gertrude Kapelput (Kane). In the second episode, her maternal instincts told her that her son was in danger, because of a woman. Audiences will discover their European background, their family history as "they had a lot of money there and then fled, so it went away."
Taylor analyzes the mother/son dynamic, "They have a remarkably close relationship. Looking at the comic book history, he was a bullied kid who didn't have any friends. He was alone and didn't have peers he could rely upon. So he found a lot of that in his mother. I feel like their connection and closeness - it's not so much creepy as it is an insular connection that they have."
Gotham continues on Fox, Mondays at 8pm. Readers, are you excited to see what happens when Penguin is reunited with his mother?
