Former American Idol contestant Joanne Borgella, 32, has died from the rare endometrial cancer she was diagnosed with in 2013.
"With heavy hearts, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Joanne," her family announced the sad news on Facebook.
In 2013, Borgella was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, but she kept fans in the loop regarding her treatment and the heavy amounts of radiation and chemotherapy that tolled the disease.
According to cancer.org, endometrial cancer starts in the inner lining of the uterus (womb). This rare cancer starts in the uterus and is called endometrial carciomas. These cancers belong to a group of cancers called sarcomas.
Borgella's last update to her fans on her cancer journey was Sept. 23, but on Saturday her family wrote, "At an early age, Joanne made a choice to serve and trust the Lord; and since her diagnosis over a year ago, Joanne made a choice to also be a fighter and share her journey with the world."
Her family wrote of her faith and love of singing:
"Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken throughout every obstacle she encountered. Although our family is suffering with this great loss, we find comfort in the closeness Joanne shared with the Lord. We know her spirit still shines and will continue to live on in heaven."
Borgella was signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Miami and Los Angeles. She was also a winner of Mo'Nique's Fat Chance Pageants as "Miss F.A.T." in 2004 and a Top 24 contestant on the seventh season of American Idol in 2008.
