It's currently being reported that a man holding a rifle has shot a soldier who was standing guard in Ottawa's War Memorial next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Witnesses claim that more shots have been fired near Parliament Hill, according to the CBC News.
The publication claims that a cafeteria worker, Alain Merisier, notes that he "saw a man in a car at the Centre Block with a long gun." Following the shooting, police sealed off the scene and aided the injured solider who was keeping guard.
Another eyewitness, Scott Walsh – an employee on Parliament Hill – notes that he had witnessed a man with a double-barreled shotgun donned in both a scarf and blue jeans. The gunman allegedly jumped over a wall that surrounds Parliament Hill while holding his gun. He then forced someone out of their car, drove to the front of Parliament Hill and continued to fire at least two more shots.
The CBC reports that "cabinet ministers, MPs and journalists in the buildings house the House of Commons and Senate were in lockdown as police tracked the gunman."
As of this reporting, police are still searching for the shooter. The Prime Minister's Office, however, is both safe and not located on Parliament Hill. The Prime Minister has been taken off the premises.
Sitting in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the National War Memorial is in Confederation Square with the Parliament buildings in the back.
The area is currently sealed off with witnesses being brought to police headquarters and reporters led to the Chateau Laurier Hotel, which is near where the incident took place.
