This week's Top Chef, titled "Boston's Bravest and Finest," has the chefs on edge after last week's elimination. Mei is on Cloud 9 after winning it, while Katsuji's trying to make light of being on the bottom. Aaron and Keriann get into it because Aaron feels a chef needs to be good at molecular gastronomy to succeed, and actor Patrick Swaayze made an appearance. (By the way, I have to mention reader Eater Fan who commented in last week's episode recap that Keriann's title of "World's Greatest Young Chef" was earned at the World Association of Chefs Conference in Dubai. Thanks for the info!)
James talks about how all the chefs are feeling each other out as well as he's a huge Patrick Swayze fan with a tattoo of a picture of him on his arm. Go figure. The chefs arrive in the kitchen, where Padma is with Chef Todd English for the quickfire challenge. The challenge is basically making surf and turf, but you can only choose your ingredients when either the land or sea lantern turns on. Yeah, not that interesting. There's no immunity for the quickfire, but the winner gets $5,000.
In the middle of the challenge, Katie bumps into Katsuji, making the chili sauce he was cooking fall on the floor. He's upset and lets her know it, but the way he lashes out is hilarious! I love him! Another Katsuji-ism during the challenge was, "If God gives you lemons, take a tequila shot and then squeeze a lemon in your mouth!"
Padma and Todd go around tasting the dishes. Todd chooses Joy and Stacy for the bottom and Katsuji and James for the top. The winner is ... James!
For the elimination challenge, the chefs will cook for the Boston fire and police departments. They are divided up into five teams with Mei not liking being on a team with Katie and Katsuji. Each team will take turns getting their ingredients based on the number of their team, so Team No. 5 picks whatever's left.
The challenge is basically making each chef like a first responder. Adam talks about how his mother worked at the World Trade Center during 9/11 and survived, so this challenge means a lot to him to cook for those who risk their lives to save others. Mei takes charge of her team, which rubs Katsuji the wrong way. Aaron and Keriann are butting heads yet again in deciding what they're going to cook.
Already in the kitchen, Mei and Katsuji argue over who's going to make the sauce. Katsuji is going to make it, but Mei demands to taste it to make sure it's good. Lo and behold, Mei tastes it and it's actually good! Aaron, Keriann and Stacy's team is still not getting along and usually it shows in the food they prepare, so we'll see.
Just like last week, the judges gave their feedback about each dish right to the chefs' faces when serving the dish. This is a really great change the producers have made this season. It makes the judging a lot more interesting when the chefs hear the feedback before going to the judges' table. The judges are eating with representatives from the fire and police departments.
Teams 1 through 3 did well with the judges, but Team 4 got criticized immensely for having undercooked veal and using vanilla with it as well. Team 5 — Aaron, Keriann and Stacy — is a mess. The judges tell them Stacy's chicken is cooked perfectly, but Aaron and Keriann's garnishes are terrible. Both of them proceed to throw each other under the bus to the judges. Back at the kitchen, Keriann and Aaron go at it in front of the other chefs. Now this is great television!
At the judges' table, the first two teams are the judges' favorites. In the end, Gregory, Adam and Rebecca win!
Teams 4 and 5 are, not surprisingly, the least favorite. Stacy's chicken saved Keriann or Aaron from going home. Instead, Joy is told to "please pack your knives and go" because of her extremely undercooked veal.
Till next week!
