The recent sale of the Gears of War video game franchise to Microsoft from original developers Epic Games has put a lot of pressure on Black Tusk, the new studio that is now in charge of the Xbox One exclusive titles. Luckily, Epic Game's former director of production, Rod Fergusson, was put in charge of the games over at Black Tusk - thus ensuring that the game's future would involve plenty of its past. So what should we expect from the upcoming GoW chapter?

"It's the same thing with all sequels," Fergusson told OXM this week. "This isn't a great way of phrasing it, but I always talk about shipping a sequel to customers as 'managing betrayal'. They want something new but they don't want something so new that it doesn't feel like what they want. But if you put out something that's very familiar and is the same as the game they just had, then it's like 'I've already had this. This isn't new enough.'"

In other words, fans might feel betrayed, but it's all for the greater good in terms of delivering a great game. But what else can we expect from the upcoming Gears of War titles on Xbox One? According to IGN's interview with Microsoft's Phil Spencer, Fergusson's team of developers is looking to the past to influence the future of the franchise.

"I think [about] the story and the setting and what they're going through as a band," Spencer said. "Gears of War, the name really meant something to what that game was about. We need to get back to that."
