During the New York Comic Con, audiences were lining up to watch the first red-band trailer for PlayStation's drama series, Powers. Based on the comic book by Brian Michael Bendis, actress Susan Heyward discusses hr comic book alter ego, Deena Pilgrim, describing her as "the new kid in town."
As we mentioned here, Powers is set in an alternate world where superpowers have become part of everyday life. Detective Christian Walker (Copley) gains a new parter as Deena Pilgrim (Heyward) has just been assigned to the "Powers" Division of the Chicago Police Department. The first story arc from writer Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming, "Who Killed Retro Girl?" follows the lead detectives as they investigate the murder of a popular super heroine (played by Michelle Forbes).
In a video interview with Comic Book Resources, Heyward discusses how she built the emotional arc for her role as Deena, "She gets really confused when the people around her aren't saying what's clear, what's obviously happening and this is obviously what we need to do to get to truth and to solve the case. So why are we even playing with, like, niceties and being politic. I love how unpolitic she is."
In the comics, Deena has been assigned to Walker as his new partner. For reasons of his own, Walker doesn't want her around. The more he pushes her away, the more she wants to know what his secret is.
The Following actress continues, "I moved around a lot as a kid, and being the new kid in town can put you on your toes. So there's something about accepting, 'All right, I'm new. This moment's gonna happen with or without me so I better jump in with two feet.'"
