Buckle up, because we are about to take you on a carnival ride at the Freak Show. American Horror Story premiered the second part of its two-part Halloween special called "Edwards Mordrake." In this episode we pick up right where we left off last week, with Mordrake searching for a victim from the freak show to claim and take back with him to the other side.
Last week, against the warning of her minions, Elsa Mars decided to take the stage and perform on Halloween, which unbeknownst to her summoned the spirit of former 18-century carnie, Edward Mordrake.
The two-faced sideshow commodity has risen from the dead and is searching for his pure freak to add to his collection. As we saw last episode, Ed is interviewing the freaks to find the best one to take back with him to the other side. After interviewing Ethel Darling, he makes his way to some of the other freaks including Pepper, deeming that no one that he has encountered yet is good enough for his collection.
To decide which freak to add to his assemblage, he interviews each one asking for them to reveal their greatest shame. Through this interviewing process, viewers get some background information on the freaks, especially tattoo boy who says that he got everything but his face tattooed to prove to the world that he is the monster that every saw him as.
Having still not found a worthy accessory, Edward makes his way to Elsa Mar's tent, maybe to claim the ringleader herself. However, when he shows up, Elsa thinks he's searching for a little bit more. He quickly explains that he isn't looking for a romp in the sheets but rather for her to tell him her greatest shame.
Elsa reluctantly tells Mordrake about her time in Germany, and sets the scene for something truly horrifying. In 1932 Berlin, part of the then Weimar Republic, Elsa worked in a sex house as a dominatrix. While her counterparts were engaging in all sorts of lewd behavior, Mars reveals that she never let any of her clients touch her. Instead she inflicted pain on them order for them to get their kicks. She even forced one of her clients to sit on a toilet seat made of nails to go to the bathroom.
Still not sure that she is the right one to take, Mordrake makes her tell him the story of how she lost her legs.
In a gruesome flashback scene, viewers see Elsa as she was lured to a hotel and drugged "enough to be powerless, but not enough to forget." She was set to star in a video that the person at the hotel was making, and it seems that the videographer was into some pretty horrifying stuff. The producers of the film cut off Elsa's legs while she was drugged in order to make the short film.
After revealing all her trials and tribulations, Edwards Mordrake's second head explains that Elsa is the one that they want to take. She then begs to be killed by Mordrake.
However, it seems Elsa is saved by the bell- literally, when Mordrake is distracted by a sound coming from the woods.
Viewers also get to catch up with Twisty this episode. The girl, which the serial killing clown kidnapped, makes a run for it but is closely followed by the clown himself. Jimmy and Esmeralda witness the scene from the woods, noticing that Twisty has tackled the girl and taken her back to his bus of horrors. Jimmy looks to track down the girl and save her from the clown, but what they don't expect is to become part of the clown's weird show, when Dandy captures them.
Dandy puts Esmeralda in a box, acting as a magician and tries to saw her in half. Jimmy loosens his hand bindings and knocks Dandy out before he can do any real damage. Twisty seems to be really enjoying the show and claps about it. All of the victims end up escaping except for Jimmy, who now becomes Twisty's sole victim.
Hearing all the commotion from the clown's show, Mordrake leaves Elsa and pays a visit to Twisty. After Edward persuades the clown to take his mask off, viewers get a listen to his story.
He was a clown in a circus who made the children laugh, but he says he couldn't stand the other carnies because they were mean to him. Not wanting the clown to be part of the show anymore, the carnies set him up to take the fall for a rumor about the clown getting inappropriate with some of the children.
After escaping the carnival he can't seem to find work again as a clown, so he decides to come home. He gets frustrated when he can't find work and tries to kill himself by putting a gun in his mouth, but only blows his jaw off, explaining his deformity.
After Twisty reveals his whole story, Mordrake ends up realizing he is the one, and kills him, and he adds him to the collection of other freaks.
After Dandy realizes that Twisty has been killed, he picks up his former mentors mask and follows in his footsteps. He then goes home and kills his maid played by Patti LaBelle.
The town's people, thinking that they are free from the serial killing clown, go to the carnival to thank all the freaks for their help in returning the kidnapped children, in a pretty heartfelt moment.
Tune in next week for an all-new episode of American Horror Story.
