Joss Whedon Teases Global Scope, Public Mistrust in 'The Avengers 2'

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will arrive in theaters in May and will propel the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward into Phase Three. From all the interviews and spoilers about the movie, it seems to be packed to capacity with characters and plot lines, and writer and director Joss Whedon potentially teased a major one in a recent interview.

Whedon appeared on Marvel's web series "The Watcher" and first spoke a bit about the global scope and scale of the movie. He said the cast and crew shot in numerous international locations, including the Italian Alps. "We were in Seoul, Korea. We were in Johannesburg. We shot a little in Bangladesh. Then all over England," he said.

But with that worldwide scope comes the realization that not everyone loves this group of superheroes. In fact, some have quite the opposite feeling about The Avengers. "This is a very global film," Whedon said. "We wanted the world perspective on The Avengers. They're being The Avengers and that's a global thing and it doesn't make everybody love them, so we wanted to see both sides of that."

Whedon could be referencing two things here. Firstly, he could be talking about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. As we know, the Maximoff twins are, to put it mildly, not the Avengers' biggest fans in this movie, and the superpowered siblings would likely come into direct conflict with the team.

The other, juicier possibility is that Age of Ultron lays the groundwork for Captain America: Civil War. If significant portions of the world do not trust The Avengers, then could this lead to the Superhuman Registration Act that sparks the Civil War storyline in the comics?
