Hip-hop rivals Chris Brown and Drake were hit with a $16 million lawsuit on Wednesday over the bottle-throwing brawl involving their entourages at a New York City nightclub that took place in June.
Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. filed a $16 million lawsuit against the two pop stars claiming that both men "instigated, encouraged, or at least failed to stop the fight" that took place at the hip Manhattan nightclub Greenhouse on June 14. The bottle-tossing free-for-all supposedly broke out when Brown and Drake, along with their protégées, crossed paths at Greenhouse. According to police, the dispute began when friends of Drake approached Brown on the dance floor as he was attempting to leave the club's basement lounge. There exists bad blood between the two musicians, supposedly having to do with hip-hop princess Rihanna. Following the fight many nigh-clubbers, including Brown and NBA star Tony Parker, were left injured.
Entertainment Enterprises owns the trademark for Greenhouse, and they claim that the venue has been given a bad rep ever since the highly publicized fight. According to the entertainment company, a $4 million deal to license Greenhouse's name for other clubs around the country has since fallen through. While the current owners of the NYC club are not involved in the lawsuit against Brown and Drake, they presently face other suits involving the fight, including a $20 million claim from Parker.
According to Enterprises' lawyer Andrew T. Miltenberg, "It's [Brown and Drake's] posse, and they're in charge, and to the extent that they could have controlled or dissipated whatever was going on, we don't believe they did."
The New York City Greenhouse was shut down following the brawl, and reopened to the public on July 10. The venue is currently fighting a State Liquor Authority effort that hopes to strip Greenhouse of its liquor license.
