Moving right into part two from tonight's earlier episode, "Pharmacy," HBO's drama miniseries Olive Kitteridge concludes its first debut night with the appropriately titled "Incoming Tide." Focussing mostly on a new character that's come home for a mysterious reason, this episode sees a new chapter of Olive's life, years after the events of Part one. She and Henry are still together and still very much different, but now they've aged and are dealing with their son's marriage ... among other things. A 20-something Kevin Coulson (Cory Michael Smith of Fox's Gotham) returns to town from New York where he's studying to become a psychiatrist, which is obviously fitting considering his mother, Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) had plenty of problems. Running into Olive at the marina, the two reminisce and catch up in his car on the windy day. They talk about what they have in common: family members who suffered from depression. Kevin says his mother was never diagnosed, but was clearly bipolar. Olive says her father was as well, and that he shot himself.

Unfortunately, this refreshing scene (compared to the depression of part one) is interrupted by some terrifying delusions that Kevin experiences. While that in itself is enough to change the pace of the episode, Olive and Kevin witness Patty Howe (Rachel Brosnahan) fall over a ledge into the ocean. Forcing his delusions away, Kevin saves her.

Olive gives Kevin some clothes from Christopher, and then they join Henry for their son's rehearsal dinner. Both Olive and Kevin are maybe equally uncomfortable at this event, but the aspiring psychologist notices O'Casey's last words that he wrote on a bar napkin the night her died.

This leads to a flashback to a scene from part one at Kevin's house. While Olive is checking in on Rachel and Christopher is being pissy about his mom, Kevin and O'Casey have a discussion. It's actually pretty intriguing and nice-kind of like a mentor talking to a mentee.

After the wedding rehearsal, Kevin goes back to the Kitteridge home to spend the night but Olive has other plans. She makes Kevin drive to the water and get rid of the shotgun and bullets he was going to use to kill himself. Somehow, she knew. Before leaving town, Kevin visits Patty. They compare scars from the incident the day before.

Meanwhile, Denise and Jerry came back to town to visit, stopping by the Kitteridge's a few weeks before the wedding. It turns out Jerry is kind of a jerk these days, which makes Olive finally feel for "the mouse." Olive remembers this visit just before she and Henry head over to the wedding.

Olive manages to say just about everything wrong during the wedding, but swears she's trying to be nice. After plenty of awkwardness, Olive retires to her son's bedroom and has a flashback of Christopher as a sick child. Unfortunately, Olive's nap is interrupted a few times, once by her new daughter-in-law that isn't saying anything too nice about her.

Angry, Olive gets some revenge by using a pink marker on one of Suzanne's white sweaters and steals an earring of hers. Before leaving the room, she also takes one of her son's loafers out of his closet and puts it into her purse. After running into Patty who asks to hug her "guardian angel," Olive throws Christopher's shoe away and leaves with Henry.

The episode ends with Suzanne searching on her hands and knees searching for her lost earring.
