Following a brief break last week, Fox's new series Mulaney was back again earlier tonight. In "Sweet Jane," Mulaney attempts to find out why Jane (Nasim Pedrad) has not liked any of his girlfriends, while Lou Cannon (Martin Short) tries to plan a "dignified" death.
Kicking off with John Mulaney on the phone with his girlfriend, Kristen, we find the comedian talking much like a child does to his mother. Such an occurrence causes Motif (Seaton Smith) to ask Mulaney why he is the way he is with women. "I went through puberty in the 90s. That's what girls liked back then," he responds. He then comes to the sudden realization that he learned how to pick up girls from Ross (David Schwimmer) in Friends. Apparently Motif has never seen or heard of the show. But don't worry... he will.
Jane enters, deciding to take bad credit over just going out and buy stamps. Mulaney then tells her about his new girlfriend and begs Jane to be nice. It seems as though she's had a problem with all of John's girlfriends. Hmm... is she jealous?
Meanwhile, everyone's favorite character to hate, Andre, enters, telling the crew about his blues show coming up this week. Unfortunately for him, no one plans on going.
Skipping over to Lou Cannon, Mulaney discovers that his boss has some very interesting plans about his death after Short gets shocked plugging Mulaney's laptop in. He screams, "I did it for the laughs!" –– Something he says whenever he thinks he may die.
Mulaney then brings up the fact that he hopes Cannon doesn't die on the toilet... which causes him to completely freak and focus more on finding dignity in his death. "We need to solve this toilet problem," Cannon tells his new writer.
That night at the Comedy Cellar, Mulaney introduces Kristen to Motif and Jane. The new girlfriend unfortunately gets right on Jane's bad side, asking if she's a comedian herself and calling her sweetie. And while she'd think it'd be fun to live with two comics apparently Jane equates it to being in the hole in Silence of the Lambs. Motif then coins the very funny phrase, "Ha Ha Hoe." Jane's reaction to Kristen only has Motif believe even more so that Jane is totally jealous.
The Fox star then heads over to neighbor Oscar's (Elliot Gould) apartment and finds his neighbor just before he's heading out with some friends –– Penny Marshall and Lorraine Bracco. He then finds out that two women can be friends if they hate the same stuff. So, what would both Jane and Kristen BOTH hate? Andre's Thursday night Blues show!
At the show, Jane meets up with both Mulaney and Kristen. Off the bat, Kristen badmouths Andre. Jane, surprisingly, doesn't like that. Kristen storms out, but not before telling Mulaney that she defends him when people say he's a Seinfeld rip off. Ouch!
The comedian then confronts Jane about being jealous. And... well, she completely rips him apart.
Back at Lou's apartment, Mulaney is told to come over for a trial run. Lou pretends to be dead (yes, on the toilet) and believes to have found out a way to beat the ever so terrifying toilet death –– to have Mulaney carry him off the toilet if he finds his body.
Kristen enters, apologizing to Mulaney about her behavior. All the while Lou is attempting to put on some skinny jeans, but Kristen pays no mind to that. She's mesmerized by Short. Turns out the comedian's new girlfriend is actually a "Ha Ha Hoe." Though she does make Cannon feel better about his death... which is good –– right?
Back at his building, Mulaney speaks with Jane about his break up. The two apologize, and Jane admits that she does get a little jealous when John starts dating... mainly because he's her backup plan.
The episode ends with Lou being electrocuted by the same outlet and heading to the hospital in critical condition. His last words? "Get me some more diet chocolate pudding. I'm such a chubby little baby!"
And what has Motif been up to? Well, watching Friends, of course!
