After making her first appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Comics presents readers their first look at Angela: Asgard's Assassin #1. The star-studded creative team of writers Kieron Gillen, Marguerite Bennett, along with artists Phil Jimenez and Stephanie Hans will debut the unstoppable Angela with her own solo series.
Comics book fans may recognize the angelic warrior when she first appeared in the Image Comics Era. Created by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane, Angela was originally meant to kill demonic superhero Al Simmons in Spawn #9. After a lengthy legal battle, the female assassin was acquired and rebooted for Marvel, with creative permission by Gaiman.
The female fighter wowed readers when she showed up in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2: Angela when she went face-to-face against Gamora. The two combatants fought each other on the surface of the moon, until Star-Lord interrupted their match, firing a warning shot.
In the retooled origin story, the finest warrior in the Tenth Realm was raised to hate Asgard with every fiber of her being. She has since been waiting for the day when the war between Asgard and Heaven to start. After the events of Original Sin: Thor & Loki -The Tenth Realm, she discovered her true origins as Odin's daughter and Thor's sister.
In an interview with Marvel, Gillen dives into the plot, "The story is Angela is basically on the run. It gives her a chance to interact with a lot of different people so by the end of the first arc we really get a sense of who Angela is vis-à-vis the Marvel Universe. You get a sense of who she is and where she fits into the larger picture."
In the narrative, Angela has been cast out from the Tenth Realm. Wanting nothing to do with Asgard, she has to strike out on her own and create for herself a new path. But what does she really want? In order for Angela to redeem herself and start off with a clean slate, she will have destroy anyone who try to take it from her.
