Scott McKenzie, a man made famous in 1967 during L.A.'s "Summer of Love" after performing "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)," died on Saturday in L.A. at the age of 73.
A statement on McKenzie's website announced the singer's death on Saturday. McKenzie had been in and out of the hospital since 2010 battling Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system.
"San Francisco," which became a lyrical representation and musical trademark of the 1960s countercultural movement, was written by John Phillips, front man of the folk rock/psychedelic pop band The Mamas & The Papas. The tune was released in May 1967 with McKenzie singing vocals, and eventually rose to no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. McKenzie went on to tour with The Mamas & The Papas during in 1990s.
The statement on McKenzie's website reads:
"It is much sadness that we report the passing of Scott McKenzie in LA on 18th August, 2012. Scott had been very ill recently and passed away in his home after two weeks in hospital. It has been our pleasure to maintain this web site over the past 15 years and this is the hardest update of them all. Farewell our much loved and wonderful friend." Gary and Raylene Hartman.
