A new era has just begun in the Marvel Comics Universe, which means readers should dare not miss out on the epic continuation of Thor #2. With Thor gone and the Frost Giants spreading their reign of terror, writer Jason Aaron (Scalped) and artist Russell Dauterman (Cyclops) now put Female Thor up to the test as the goddess of thunder.
As we previously mentioned, the announcement was publicly made in ABC's The View, as Marvel proudly presented their first look at Thor #1. A major change took place in the inscription of Thor's hammer, the Mjolnir. The original words stated, "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."
Now let's recap to Original Sin, during Thor's unexpected downfall in this battle with the all-too powerful Nick Fury. Having stolen the cosmic powers of The Watcher, Fury whispered a few words to bring down his enemy. The hammer, known as Mjolnir, has a mind of its own now, refusing to be picked up by anyone, especially by its previous owner.
In our review of Thor #1, Aaron played into the themes of self-value and self-worth throughout the storyline. Now that Thor has been stripped of his powers, what is he really good for? Even his allies are asking themselves that question, including Odin, who couldn't pick up Mjolnir either. The dialogue really sunk into gender roles in society when Odin argues with his wife, Freyja. Dauterman delivered an impressive sight to see the frost giants marching underwater.
In the second installment, the Frost Giants have invaded Midgard, leaving destruction and chaos in their wake. A new Thor will have to rise from the ashes. But can our super heroine fight off the darkness? Or will she be consumed by it?
With the first issue off to a great start, we can't wait to get our hands on the second.
Thor #2 hits stores on November 12. Readers, are you excited to see Female Thor in action?
