Myla Dalbesio opens up about being the "biggest girl" to land a Calvin Klein campaign. The 27-year-old, size 10 model was shot by Lachlan Bailey for the label's "Perfect Fit" underwear campaign alongside a roster of much slimmer models, including Jourdan Dunn and Lara Stone. She discusses the difficulties of not being skinny enough to be a regular model, but not being large enough to be "plus-sized."
Dalbesio spoke to Elle about the moment she booked the campaign with Calvin Klein.
"It's crazy!" she exclaimed. "I can't even. It was such a surreal moment. I cried."
Booking an underwear campaign for such an iconic brand is especially notable for Dalbesio, who is what the fashion industry would call "plus size."
"It's kind of confusing because I'm a bigger girl," Dalbesio says. "I'm not the biggest girl on the market but I'm definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating."
It's a pretty big deal for a brand like Calvin Klein, which is known for launching the careers of such thin models as Brooke Shields and Kate Moss, to cast a model who deviates from the size 0 standard.
To Dalbesio, who spent years abusing Adderall, crash dieting, and flirting with bulimia in an attempt to whittle herself to "straight size," this campaign represents progress.
"It's not like [Calvin Klein] released this campaign and were like 'Whoa, look, there's this plus size girl in our campaign.' They released me in this campaign with everyone else; there's no distinction. It's not a separate section for plus size girls," she said.
