After Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch, announced his engagement to Sophie Hunter in the births, deaths and marriages column of The Times, he took a more modem route to chat about his engagement and his take on having babies "cumberbabies" in an interview with PEOPLE.
"One of the most incredible things about getting engaged, which we had no idea would be coming back out way, is the amount of love that just comes flooding back," the 12 Years a Slave actor told People. "I thought it was just all about us declaring that we were in love and getting married, but actually it's the world going, 'We love you too! It's amazing. Family, friends, the world...it's amazing."
The publication asked the actor what he thought of fans wanting him to have "Cumberbabies," and his reply was, "Oh my God. Well, my mother is also waiting for Cumberbabies."
Regarding his odd way of announcing his engagement he said, "It's what I would have done if I wasn't sort of famous. It's what we do. It's kind of traditional thing to do." The 38-year-old actor continued, "I wanted to have some control over the message. I don't tweet or do social media. It's too impersonal. I would rather do what we did, and have people find it, and not see us from s**ty, grainy footage staring lovingly into each other's eyes with a ring on someone's finger. I wanted it to be ours."
The couple met on the set of the film Burlesque Fairytale in 2009, however, did not start dating until early 2014.
Cumberbatch is best known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the series Sherlock since 2010. His wife-to-be Sophie, 36, is a British theater and opera singer.
