The Vampire Diaries has seen many transformations from humans into vampires, werewolves or hybrids, but there is still one mortal left, Matt Donovan. Zach Roerig, who plays Matt, is opening up about season six of The Vampire Diaries and what his character's relationship with Enzo (played by Michael Malarkey) is becoming.
After five seasons of seeing his friends and love ones fall victim to the mythical creatures or turn into a creature in Mystic Falls, Matt's allegiances to staying human have become more obvious. "Initially those questions of whether you're pro-human or equal opportunity would've been hard to make," Zach told TVGuide.com in a recent interview.
"But now he's seen enough terrible violence and seen his friends commit these terrible acts [and] he's had a long enough time to distance himself. I think Matt realizes he just wanted a normal life and the only reason he's had to go through all this is because he's been such a dedicated friend."
He continued saying, "We all face that in life, where so many strikes happen against a friend and at some point you have to let them go and move on. I think that's where Matt is."
The 29-year-old actor also opened up about his character's current friendship with Enzo. This week Matt will go back to his old self and help save his friends from his mentor Tripp (played by Colin Ferguson) who just wants to capture all the vampires he calls his friends.
"Enzo and Matt's relationship starts as a result of Tripp and Matt's relationship. It starts out as a very tumultuous, aggressive relationship but becomes almost a benign friendship where they both have the same objectives. So, they're able to go parallel moving forward - maybe not holding hands," he explained to the publication.
As for other relationships on the series, TV Guide reported that although Elena's (played by Nina Dobrev) memories are actually gone, it won't stop Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder) from helping her remember their love.
"In a swoon-worthy scene, Damon will fill Elena in on some of their relationship's pivotal moments, Season 3's hot hotel makeout included. But it's Elena whose frustration gets the best of her, and she ends up risking her life to get those memories back," TV Guide reported. "Will it work? Just when they — and viewers — have given up hope, prepare for a scene that will leave you screaming."
Tune in on Thursday to see what happens next for Matt and his friends in Mystic Falls. Plus, see what happens when Damon refreshes Elena's memory about their romantic past.
