Guardians of the Galaxy was the biggest movie of 2014 so far, with plenty of fans of the Marvel comic book movie adaptation in hot anticipation of the sequel, with a release date set for May 2017. But what if the James Gunn film ended a different way than what we saw? In a new interview, the director explained that an alternate ending could have made this movie more bittersweet than what we saw in theaters this summer. (SPOILERS to follow)
'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Plot Details, Spoilers: James Gunn Hints At Marvel Movie Trilogy
According to a new interview with Slash Film, Gunn explained that his original idea for the ending including three characters that were eventually cut out: Nebula (Karen Gillan), The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) and Grandpa Quill (Gregg Henry). The director explained that Nebula and the Collector were cut out of the ending because he wanted the film to end with the "good guys," and those characters were clearly bad. But the reason he cut Grandpa Quill was a different one.
"Grandpa Quill we cut because he was in old age make up and we were a little afraid people wouldn't recognize that it was him from the beginning of the movie," he explained. "And also, it was a pretty sad moment. It was Grandpa Quill and he has this photograph of Meredith and Peter as a little boy and he looks up at the stars and we go up to the stars and it was really sweet. It means that he must have seen Quill getting abducted at the end of that day and is still waiting for him to return but it was freaking sad so we took it out."
