Sailor Moon's return to Hulu had fans of the 90s' series jumping for joy and now its reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal is even better. The new version of the hit anime series premiered in July and it is great.
According to Zap2It, Sailor Moon Crystal airs new episodes of the series the first and third Saturdays of every month on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Neon Alley. "The premise is that a princess and her guardians from the now-destroyed Moon Kingdom were reborn on Earth in time to fight off the returned evil being that they fought before," Zap2It revealed.
The original Sailor Moon started streaming last May on Hulu with an uncut and remastered version of the hit series. The first four episodes of the 200-episode series aired and rocked, but the reworked series has taken it one step further. Sailor Moon ran from 1995 to 2000, for four seasons. It was about a magical teenage girl who discovers her destiny to become a warrior. She banded together with other Sailor Soldiers to defend Earth.
The Crystal version of the series is a much closer adaption to the Naoko Takeuchi's original manga. "Thus far the episodes have matched up act-for-act with the source material -- a choice that expedites the story significantly. In place of the original's filler episodes that show Sailor Moon and her soldiers fighting monsters of the week, Crystal puts the focus on the mythology that the series is based on," the publication explained.
"The parallels between the events of the past and the events in the present are a significant through-line that was lost somewhat in the padded first season of the original anime."
The publication continued, saying, "While this faster storytelling pace might irritate some fans, it successfully helps transition Sailor Moon into the modern age. Many TV viewers don't have patience for 46 episodes, which is the length of the original Season 1. Crystal is on pace to tell that same story in 13 episodes, providing a leaner viewing experience and making the series better for it."
You can watch the original series and compare it to Crystal for yourself through various streaming methods.
