Who needs blood tests and x-rays when you have Daisy the Dog? When a Labrador named Daisy was just a puppy, the charity, Medical Detection Dogs, started training her to sniff out cancers and fatal diseases through skin, breath and urine, the Advertiser and Review reports.
Fast-forward 10 years later and Daisy has successfully detected 550 cases of cancer! This amazing success rate has won her the Blue Cross Medal for cancer prevention and detection.
Dogs like Daisy can detect chemicals that are within cancer cells. She even detected her owner, Dr. Claire Guest's, breast cancer.
"Daisy kept nuzzling and pawing at my chest one day, which really alarmed me," Dr. Guest said. "Fortunately, I was able to have it removed but if it wasn't for Daisy it would have gone undetected for much longer and could have been more serious."
The dogs at Medical Detection Dogs are being trained specifically in detecting the dangerous cancer cells. The charity hopes that this will help scientist move forward in finding ways to detect early signs of cancer. On their official website, the group states that Chief Executive and Director of Operations, Dr. Guest, is currently working on advanced research.
"We are currently working on a number of pioneering research projects involving canine olfaction, including the training of dogs to detect cancer, blood sugar changes, Addison's disease and narcolepsy."
