One Direction are riding high after their American Music Awards triumph for Artist of the Year, but the boy band is still upset over Matt Lauer's invasive Today Show interview.

In the sitdown at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL, Zayn Malik was noticeably absent.

"Where is Zayn?" the morning show host asked.

"He's got a tummy bug so he's not very well at the moment so he couldn't make it over," bandmate Liam Payne answered.

The NBC host pushed on, "There's obviously a lot of concern, a lot of fans have been tweeting overnight. There's been a lot of action on social media about him. Is it something more serious than just a minor illness? There have been rumors of substance abuse. What's going on?"

"No, he's just got a stomach bug. He's okay. He's just at home. He just needs to rest. He's okay," Liam replied, while he and his other One Directioners were stunned by the implication.

According to Radar Online, the heartthrobs were livid after the show.

"They did not know that they were going to be put on the spot like that and had they have known, they would have never done Today," a source told the site. "It was incredibly unprofessional of Matt and management is furious! One Direction are threatening that they will never go on the Today Show again!"

The source stressed that drugs were not the reason for the "Steal My Girl" singer's absence.

"There is no concern whatsoever for Zayn," according to Radar. "One Direction is handling this fame thing the best they know how. But there are no specific worries for anyone in particular. If any of the boys felt that one of them was getting out of hand, you'd better bet they would have an intervention. These guys are just kids, but they are all-around good guys."

Do you think the group should be upset or was Matt Lauer doing his job?
