MStars News has learned that former Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry Jr. has died over the weekend.

The 78-year-old's family confirmed the news Sunday, Nov. 23, after Barry died in a Washington hospital.

The former mayor was currently serving as the Ward 8 councilman.

Barry was treated at Howard University Hospital last week after suffering from a urinary tract infection. After being released Saturday, his family claims he seemed to be feeling better.

"In his own words, he was 'fantabulous' — his words, not mine," the former controversial mayor's spokeswoman LaToya Foster said during a press conference at United Medical Center Sunday morning, after Barry's death was confirmed.

Barry was out with his son, Christopher, where he collapsed on his return home.

United Medical Center Hospital spokeswoman Natalie Williams revealed that the former mayor checked into the hospital around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning and died at 1:46 a.m.

The former D.C. mayor's family issued a statement that read:

"It is with deep regret that the family of former four-time D.C. Mayor and Ward 8 City Councilman Marion S. Barry Jr. announces that he has passed.

Mr. Barry transitioned at approximately 12 midnight Nov. 23, 2014, at the United Medical Center, after having been released from Howard University Hospital Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014.

Mr. Barry released his autobiography Mayor for Life: The Incredible Story of Marion Barry Jr. in June 2014.

He will appear on Oprah today at 9 p.m. to discuss his book and 40-year political and civil rights career.

He leaves behind his wife Cora Masters Barry and his only child, son Marion Christopher Barry.

We ask that you please respect the family’s privacy at this time.

Further details will be forthcoming.

Marion Barry was known for being a good and bad mayor who was detailed in his new book Mayor for Life.

Marion served four terms as mayor and on the D.C. Council's Ward 8 seat. As a young man, Barry also worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Barry was arrested on drug charges and served a six-month sentence.

The book describes Barry's history as:

Known nationally as the disgraced mayor caught on camera smoking crack cocaine in a downtown hotel room with a mistress, Marion Barry Jr. has led a controversial career. This provocative, captivating narrative follows the civil rights activist, going back to his Mississippi roots, his Memphis upbringing and his academic school days, up through his college years and move to Washington, D.C., where he became actively involved in civil rights, community activism and bold politics.
