Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network has given the axe to their sports/espionage drama, Matador. After finishing up its first season, the action-packed adventures of Gabriel Luna as Tony "Matador" Bravo and Annie Mason (Nicky Whelan) are done infiltrating the corrupt organization of Andres Galan (Alfred Molina).
As we previously mentioned, Matador follows the unexpected rise of Tony Bravo (Luna), a professional soccer player for the LA Riot who earns his nickname for his antics on the playing field. But no one suspects he is an undercover operative executing missions for the CIA. Agent Bravo is at a point where his true identity will be revealed and when his assignment may prove to be his most dangerous.
Before she passed away, this was the work from renowned actress Elizabeth Peña. On the show, Peña played the comedic and dramatic role of Maritza Sandova. What's surprising about this news is that the show had already been granted a second season.
According to Deadline, a statement was released by El Rey, "Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scene."
International sales were weak, even though there was a strong initial interest at first. The lack of revenue led to the decision not to continue with Season 2.

El Rey adds, "We want to thank everyone involved, from the extraordinarily talented cast and crew to the amazing production team. We appreciate all that they have done and look forward to the opportunity to work with them in the future."
El Rey still has the second season of From Dusk Till Dawn and Lucha Underground is currently underway
Matador will not be given a second season by the El Rey Network. Readers, what do you think of the cancellation?
