Another DC Comics title is making its way to television, thanks to AMC. From their Vertigo imprint, writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon's Preacher has been given a pilot order and will be adapted by collaborators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, along with Breaking Bad writer Sam Catlin.
As we previously mentioned here, Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a man of the cloth, who loses his faith after being possessed by a supernatural creature named Genesis. A hybrid of angel and demon, Genesis takes control of Preacher, causing him to unwillingly kill his entire congregation and destroy his church. With newfound powers, Custer journeys across the U.S., with his ex-lover Tulip O'Hare and the hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, to find God.
According to Deadline, the This Is The End scribes have already written the script, while The Green Hornet executive producer will handle directing duties for the pilot. Rake writer Catlin will serve as showrunner for the series. The comic book creators themselves, Ennis and Dillon, will co-executive produce with pilot authors.
In a joint statement, Rogen & Goldberg are overjoyed with this announcement, "Preacher has been our favorite comic since it first come out. Garth Ennis is one of our idols and it's an incredible honor to be working on this. We promise we won't make too many dick jokes and ruin it."
While casting is already underway, we can only speculate how much of the comic will make its way to the TV screen. Can Rogen and Goldberg keep such mature-themed characters such as Arse-Face, Pube, and The Chunt Brothers? Or will the pilot get mixed reviews, much like their previous adaptation of The Green Hornet.
While Marvel has taken Hollywood by storm, DC Comics have dominated television with their superhero shows. Fox has Gotham, NBC has Constantine, and the CW had a smash success with their crossover event with The Flash and Arrow.
