Following those rants heard around the world – the ones recorded during a phone call with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva back in 2010 – Mel Gibson has been looking for a way to grab some sort of credit in the industry he once dominated. Well, it's now being reported that Lionsgate has decided to acquire the distribution rights to Gibson's newest thriller titled Blood Father. So, perhaps it's time we put those racist, homophobic, and yes, anti-Semitic comments behind us? Though, in listening to the recordings, it's pretty, pretty, pretty difficult. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the film stars Gibson and was directed by Mesrine director Jean-Francois Richet. This past summer, the former Lethal Weapon star was seen in the Expendables 3 – the third (and hopefully final) installment of Sylvester Stallone's uber action films – as the character Stonebanks (yep, really).
According to IMDB, Blood Father is about an ex-con who "reunites with his estranged wayward 16-year-old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her."
The film co-stars Elisabeth Rohm, William H. Macy and Diego Luna and was adapted from Peter Craig's best-selling novel. Craig is also the author of The Town, which was brought to the screen by Ben Affleck.
Back in May, it was reported that the movie appeared at the Cannes Film Festival, and earned financing from Worldview Entertainment. Of the film, Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow said, "Blood Father is an action-packed thrilled and we are looking forward to seeing Mel Gibson in this hard-hitting role."
So, readers, what do you think: will Mel Gibson ever be able to shake off the shame left by those recorded phone calls in 2010? Because, you know, racism aside, the dude is a good actor. Though racism is a pretty hard thing to move to the side...
