According to Rolling Stone, the moody ballad was was performed by the band, the Forest Rangers, and sung by Jake Smith, aka the White Buffalo. The emotional lyrics were penned by the show's creator/showrunner, Kurt Sutter, who also wrote and directed the final episode.
Sons of Anarchy music supervisor Bob Thiele Jr. discusses the theme behind the lyrics, "We know what's gonna happen and sad as it is, there is a triumphant surrender that Jax embraces in his final moments. Rather than stay in the minor key of the verse, I chose to frame the chorus in a major key which underscores Jax's decision to chose his own final destiny."
During the seven-minute musical interlude, we saw Tig (Kim Coates) wrapping his arms around Venus Van Damme (Walton Goggins). As the club's new president, Chibs (Tommy Flanagan) sat alone at the head of the table, wondering about SAMCRO's future.
