Johnny "Football" Manziel's debut as Cleveland Browns starting quarterback was bound to be the NFL's centerpiece this weekend. How did the league's newest star fare in his first start? Not as well as you might have expected!
The show was over early.
The Browns quickly fell behind by almost three scores and Manziel proved putrid, not potent, as the Bengals shut out Cleveland, taunting Manziel's signature "money" sign the whole way, 30-0.
Manziel completed just 10 passes for 80 yards, threw two interceptions, posting a quarterback rating of 27.3. His persistent scrambling netted just 13 yards on five official attempts. After starting the season so hot, the Browns' division championship hopes are shot, according to Clevelend.com.
USA Today reported that just after one game, Manziel may be out as the Browns starting quarterback. All of those railing against Brian Hoyer a week ago seem to have been silenced.
Manziel famously said on Draft Day he was ready to "wreck this league." The former Heisman winner fell to No.22 in draft because of skepticism about his height, arm strength and off-the-field personality, which includes a passion for partying.
On the field, he is best known for pinching his fingers in celebration to symbolize all the wads of cash he has. The money sign.
He didn't throw any on Sunday, but the Bengals did.
At least four Bengals players taunted Manziel with his own celebration sign, according to ESPN.com. Wallace Gilberry did it after sacking Manziel early in the game. Linebacker Rey Maualuga got in on the action after a pass deflection. Brandon Thompson continued the trend in the third quarter.
"It was a fail on my part for the position," Manziel said at the postgame press conference. "Nobody wants to win in there more than I do. It's tough to come out there and lay an egg like that."
