'The Hobbit' Director Peter Jackson Making More Tolkien Movies After 2014 Blockbuster 'Battle Of The Five Armies' - New Zealand Filmmaker Eyes 'Silmarillion'?

With The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hitting theaters this month, Peter Jackson has finally concluded his filmmaking venture with J.R.R. Tolkien's stories ... right? This release marks the sixth film adaptation of Tolkien's most popular books, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, which Jackson expanded into three films. One would think that he's exhausted these themes and characters, but there's still more from Middle-Earth: The Silmarillion. So is Jackson going to move on to the next Tolkien writings? According to him, he isn't opposed to the idea!

Speaking with Variety this week in a new profile that accompanies the release of his newest movie, Jackson said that while he isn't exactly jumping at the opportunity to work on a new film, he is very open to more Tolkien projects in the future.

"If I had to start tomorrow, I would say no, because I definitely would appreciate a break to clear my head and get my little New Zealand stories done, which is where my passion and my heart is heading now," the director explained. "But ask me in two or three years, and I'd probably say yes. It would be hard to see another filmmaker go into this world, because I certainly have an emotional ownership of it."

Jackson did however acknowledge that he is saying goodbye to some of the characters, and the actors that play them. He explained that this was very hard to do.

"Just to say to Ian [McKellan] - you're never ever going to put this beard on again, you're never ever going to wear the robes and the hat," he said. "I did find that pretty tough."

Meanwhile, Slash Film points out that, back in 2012, Jackson said The Silmarillion wouldn't get an adaptation any time soon.
