It's crazy to believe that Clifford the Big Red Dog first made his way into books (and our hearts) way back in 1963. Since then the lovable pup has been making children – and yes, some adults as well! – laugh, learn and feel joyful over the span of 40 stories and just over five decades. Now, sadly, it's being reported that creator Norman Bridwell has died at the age of 86. The BBC reports that the illustrator recently passed away in his Massachusetts home.
While starting out as a book, Clifford the Big Red Dog went on to inspire a TV show of the same name. To this day, the memorable canine has been featured on a slew of merchandise as well as on a number of honored United States buildings –– including the White House itself. Pretty impressive, huh? We haven't been to the White House. Womp, womp, womp...
Bridwell's publisher, Scholastic, recently released a statement on the illustrator's death. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our loyal and talented friend whose drawings and stories have inspired all of us and generations of children and parents," said Dick Robinson, President of Scholastic.
Bridwell's wife, Norma, whom the illustrator was married to for just under 60 years, recently noted that Clifford touched the hearts of many people.
BBC goes on to report that before his death, Bridwell was working on – and completed – two more Clifford stories. They will be released next year, which means they will follow the likes of successful stories such as Clifford Goes To Hollywood, Clifford and The Grouchy Neighbors and Clifford the Firehouse Dog.
