The career narrative of Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo goes a little something like this: he can't play in December, when the games matter. But that might be changing. This year, it has been completely false. Now that the Cowboys are NFC East champions, can Romo really go from scapegoat to NFL MVP?
Several Cowboys think so. Consider their bias, but also consider Romo's numbers.
Romo leads the NFL in completion percentage (70.3), touchdown percentage and first-down percentage, all according to ESPN.com. He has thrown four touchdowns for every interception, with 32 and eight, respectively. He also leads the league in Total QBR, at 82.3. That number tops those of even Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers and Denver Broncos star Peyton Manning. He's led the Cowboys to more than 35 points for three consecutive games for the third time since in team history and first time since 1983. Sunday he passed Troy Aikman for the most passing yards thrown in Cowboys history, according to CBSSports.com.
At the same time, Romo is climbing other ranks of all-time great Cowboys. This from the Fort Worth Star Telegram:
"Romo ranks second in franchise history in attempts (4,176), second in completions (2,721), first in touchdowns (240), second in starts (122) and third in wins (74). Not bad for an undrafted free agent."
Of course, he lacks in one important area: Super Bowl championships. Aikman won three.
But that shouldn't take away from his MVP consideration, said several members of the Cowboys to ESPN.
(DeMarco) Murray has certainly carried his share, but Tony's quarterbacking this year was indispensable," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told ESPN. "We couldn't have had the team, and we have a team that probably right now is in the top four or five teams in the league. That's pretty good qualification of the vote."
"Hell yeah, he is. He's the MVP," receiver Dez Bryant told ESPN. "Look at the performance. He's giving 'em hell in December. Icing on the cake. Give it to him. He's doing a hell of a job."
What do you think? Who would get your vote?
