John Elway thanked 'John Elway' for his service to the Denver Broncos, misspeaking during his press conference to announce the departure of head coach John Fox. The Denver Broncos GM and Vice President of Football Operations said that he'd like to start "out this press conference with a thank you to John Elway" due to a glitch in the matrix. The Denver Broncos and coach John Fox decided to "mutually part ways" following their 24-13 NFL divisional round playoff loss at home to Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts. It's a wonder John Elway didn't wish John Elway a happy retirement too, as Denver quarterback Peyton Manning weighs up his options.
As SB Nation point out, "Elway immediately caught himself and thanked Fox, but the Vine shall live forever. And for that, we are thankful."

As Deadspin's Samer Kalef says, "Was it a slip of the tongue by John Elway at his conference today, or the truth? Hell, you've earned it, John. Thank yourself."
Or, as Vice Sports' Sean Newell points out, "Here's an easy test to see if you are an ego maniac: have you ever called someone with whom you share a first name by your own full name?"

Either way, Fox and the Denver Broncos parted ways following the loss to the Colts, and Fox Sports' Jay Glazer was the first to notice anything might be awry.
Per @JayGlazer, "there's a thought if (the Broncos) lose today, could John Fox become available? If he is, he shoots to the top of lists."

A day later, he reported that Fox — who won 49 games in four years with the Broncos — was out.

As Grantland's Bill Barnwell says, "at the heart of this Fox decision," is "the vague idea that the Broncos have gone as far as they can go with Fox without taking it to the next level and winning a Super Bowl. Maybe it's true. My guess is that it's impossible to really tell."
Fox has already been tipped to interview for the vacant head coaching position with the Chicago Bears. There's no word as to what star quarterback Peyton Manning is planning, but plenty are saying it's time for him to retire.
